1 Peter 1:13

The Anchor of Your Hope

Therefore, preparing your minds for action, and being sober-minded, set your hope fully on the grace that will be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ. — 1 Peter 1:13

1 Peter 1:13

Observation

Hope is not a feeling; it is a decision. Peter gives three sharp commands to believers who are suffering. First, he says to prepare your minds for action. This phrase in Greek means to 'gird up the loins of your mind'. His readers would picture a man tying up his long robe so he could run or work without tripping. It is an image of deliberate preparation and removing mental clutter. Second, he tells them to be sober-minded. This means to be clear-headed and self-controlled, not intoxicated by the world's false promises or crippled by despair. These first two commands are the preparation for the main event. The final command is the destination for all this mental work: set your hope fully on the grace to come. Hope is not a passive wish. For Peter, it is the active, disciplined focus of a prepared mind. It is the anchor that holds a believer steady in the middle of a storm. This was not a gentle suggestion for them; it was their strategy for survival.

Reflection

It is so easy to let our hope become scattered. We place a little bit of it on our job security, a little on our health, a little on a relationship. Our hope gets spread thin across many things that can, and will, eventually fail us. Peter’s words are a loving call to bring all that scattered hope home. He is asking you to gather it all up and place it in one secure location: the certain grace that is coming when Jesus Christ is revealed. This is not wishful thinking. This is the most secure reality in the universe, guaranteed by the resurrection of Jesus from the dead. Setting your hope fully requires action. It means you must intentionally pull your hope away from the temporary things you are tempted to trust. It is a daily choice to believe that your future with Him is more real than your present troubles. When you do this, your spirit becomes steady. Your decisions are made with a quiet confidence, because your ultimate security is not in question. How would your worries for today change if your hope was truly and fully set on His coming grace?

Sit With This

What one worry can you intentionally release today by setting your hope fully on Christ's coming grace?

Prayer

Father, forgive me for placing my hope in things that are unstable and temporary. Help me to prepare my mind, to be sober, and to set my hope completely on Jesus. Let this certain hope be my strength and my peace today. Amen.

Did You Know?

The image of 'girding up the loins' was a common Middle Eastern expression for getting ready for hard work or a journey. It meant tucking one's long outer garment into a belt.
