One Place for Your Heart
You shall surely destroy all the places where the nations whom you shall dispossess served their gods, on the high mountains and on the hills and under every green tree. — Deuteronomy 12:2

Observation
As Israel prepares to enter the Promised Land, God gives them a primary instruction regarding worship. They are to completely dismantle and eradicate every site of Canaanite pagan worship they find (Deuteronomy 12:2-3). This act of destruction is immediately followed by a positive command: they are not to worship God in this chaotic, scattered way, but only at the single place He himself will choose to make his name dwell (Deuteronomy 12:4-5).
Reflection
This command to destroy can feel jarring to us, yet its target was never people, but the corrupt and dehumanizing ideas and systems that held them captive. God’s command was an act of cultural and spiritual cleansing, removing the spiritual poison that demanded child sacrifice and sexual exploitation. Our true battle is not against our neighbors, but against the spiritual lies that enslave them. Your calling is not to destroy people, but, with gentle love, to dismantle the false altars in your own life and to help others find freedom from the idols in theirs. What false 'high place' in your own heart needs to be brought low before Christ today?

What would it look like to destroy an idol in your heart while loving the person who introduced you to it?
Prayer
Lord Jesus, you are the one true place where I meet the Father. Search my heart and reveal any hidden altars where I offer my worship to lesser things. Give me courage to tear them down, and fill me with your love for my neighbors, that I might point them not to ruin, but to you. Amen.
