New Every Morning

Where do you turn when everything has fallen apart? This verse is a diamond found in rubble. The prophet is sitting amidst the ruins of Jerusalem. The city is destroyed and hope seems lost. He has cataloged his suffering in agonizing detail. Yet, in the middle of this despair, his mind shifts. He remembers something that changes everything: the Lord’s mercies (Lamentations 3:22). Verse 23 is the climax of that memory. It declares two truths. First, God’s mercies are not a finite resource that can be used up. They are 'new every morning.' This means that yesterday’s failures do not disqualify you from today’s grace. God’s supply is never depleted. Second, this daily renewal is not random. It is the direct result of God's character. 'Great is your faithfulness.' The prophet is not just saying God is faithful in a general sense. He is saying God’s faithfulness is vast, immeasurable, and the very reason new mercies arrive with the dawn. For an Israelite who felt abandoned, this was a radical claim. It meant God’s covenant promises held true even in judgment.

You may feel today like you are sitting in the ruins of a past mistake or a current trial. The weight of yesterday can feel heavy when you wake up. But God’s Word speaks a better truth over your morning. His mercies for you are not leftovers. They were created fresh for you today, specifically for the challenges and needs you will face in the next twenty four hours. This is not wishful thinking. It is a promise rooted in the very faithfulness of God. His faithfulness is not a mood. It is the unchanging core of who He is. Because He is faithful, He cannot help but be merciful. He has already shown His ultimate faithfulness at the cross of Jesus Christ, where His mercy and justice met perfectly. He did not abandon His Son, and He will not abandon you (Romans 8:32). You can trust Him with your anxieties for this day. You can trust Him with the broken pieces of your life. You can trust Him with the future you cannot see. His faithfulness is not just great. It is great enough for you, right now, this morning. What one specific worry will you entrust to His fresh, morning mercy today?

God’s faithfulness is not an idea to be understood, but a reality to be stood upon today.

Father, thank you that your mercy for me is not based on my performance yesterday. I receive your fresh grace for this day. Help me to walk in the reality that your faithfulness is my firm foundation. Amen.
