More Than a Ritual

What did you put on this morning to tell the world who you are? Paul is writing to believers in Galatia who were confused. They were being told that faith in Jesus was not enough. They thought they needed to add religious rules to be right with God. Paul brings them back to the very beginning of their faith: their baptism. For him, this was not a simple ceremony. It was a spiritual reality where a believer is united with Christ. The original audience lived in a world where clothing signaled everything about a person. It showed their status, their family, and their allegiance. A soldier wore a uniform. A king wore a royal robe. To 'put on Christ' meant you were taking on His identity completely. Your old identity, whether you were a Jew or a Gentile, a slave or a free person, was now secondary. Your primary, defining identity was Christ Himself. This was a public declaration of belonging to a new family and a new King.

God has done something for you in Christ that you could never do for yourself. When you were baptized, it was more than getting wet. In that moment of faith, God Himself clothed you. He covered your old self, your past mistakes, your failures, and your sin with the perfect righteousness of His own Son. Think about that for a moment. You are wearing Christ. This means you do not have to live today defined by your past. You are not defined by what others say about you or even what your own feelings tell you. Your true identity is secure. It is found in a Person, Jesus Christ. When the Father looks at you, He sees His Son. You belong to Him. This is a settled fact, a gift of His grace that cannot be taken away. So, how will you live today knowing this? You can walk with confidence, not in yourself, but in Him who covers you. You can face temptation knowing His strength is your protection. You can love others knowing His love is your source. Can you trust today that what God says about you is more true than anything else?

Today, when you look in the mirror, see not just yourself, but Christ in whom you are hidden and whose identity you now wear.

Lord Jesus, thank you for clothing me with Yourself, covering my sin and giving me a new identity in You. Help me to live today not in my old self but in the reality of who I am in You. Amen.

In the early church, baptismal candidates often wore new white robes after the ceremony to symbolize their new, pure identity in Christ and their cleansing from sin.
