More Grace Than All Our Sin

Have you ever felt your sin was too great for God? The apostle Paul certainly felt the weight of his past. Writing to his young friend Timothy, he has just described himself as a former blasphemer, persecutor, and violent man (1 Tim 1:13). He was, by any measure, an enemy of God. This verse explains the logic of his salvation. It was not a reward for his change of heart. It was a divine interruption. Notice the source of this change. It is “the grace of our Lord.” Paul did not generate it; he received it. This grace was not a small portion, just enough to cover his debts. It was “exceeding abundant.” It overflowed. This grace did not come alone. It arrived with two companions: faith and love. These were not qualities Paul had to muster up on his own. They were gifts that came packaged with God’s grace, all rooted “in Christ Jesus.” For the original audience, this was a radical claim. It insisted that salvation, even for the worst of sinners, is not earned by human effort but is a lavish gift from God.

Friend, God’s grace is not a limited resource. It is not a well that can run dry. Paul’s testimony is here to assure you that God’s supply of mercy is always greater than your supply of sin. You may look at your life, at your repeated failures and secret shame, and feel that you have exhausted God’s patience. You may think you have fallen one too many times. But God’s Word says His grace is “exceeding abundant.” It does not just meet you at your point of need; it overflows it. This grace is what produces true faith and real love. You cannot work these up on your own. You cannot simply decide to have more faith or to be more loving. But when you receive His grace, faith and love begin to grow. They are the fruit of His work in you, not the price of admission you must pay to get to Him. His grace is the engine, not the reward. So today, stop trying to make yourself worthy of a grace that is, by definition, a free gift. Stop measuring your failure against His forgiveness. His grace is not fragile. It is a mighty river that washes away all that stands in its path. What part of your life do you need to stop hiding and instead hold up to the cleansing flood of His grace?

Lord Jesus, my sin feels so large, but Your Word promises that Your grace is larger still. Help me to believe that it is not just enough, but abundant for me today. Teach me to live in the faith and love that flow from You alone. Amen.
