His Strength Made Perfect

Have you ever prayed for a trial to end, only to hear silence? Paul pleaded with the Lord three times to remove what he called his “thorn in the flesh” (2 Cor 12:8). This was not a casual wish. It was deep, repeated prayer from a man who knew suffering. For his audience in Corinth, a city that prized strength, status, and eloquent speakers, Paul's conclusion would have been stunning. He was not going to hide his weakness. He was going to boast in it. God’s answer to Paul is not a simple “no.” It is a re-framing of the entire situation. The Lord does not promise to remove the source of pain. He promises something far greater: His grace is sufficient. The purpose of the thorn was not to defeat Paul, but to create the exact condition necessary for God's power to be displayed in its fullness. God's strength is not just added to our own. It is made perfect, or brought to its intended completion, right in the middle of our frailty.

We spend so much of our lives trying to fix our weaknesses. We hide them, we manage them, we pray for God to take them away. But God's economy is different from ours. He sees your area of greatest struggle not as a liability, but as an opportunity for His strength to be seen most clearly. What He said to Paul, He says to you today: “My grace is sufficient for you.” His grace is not a theory. It is a present-tense reality, an active supply of divine help available for this very moment. You can trust that His power is not waiting for you to get stronger. It is made complete in your admission of need. The power of Christ is not something you earn by being good enough. It is something that comes to rest on you when you are honest enough to say, “I am not enough.” Your weakness does not disqualify you from His service. It qualifies you for His power. Where are you trying to be strong in your own ability, when God is inviting you to be weak so His power might rest upon you?

Lord Jesus, I confess that I trust my own strength far more than Yours. Forgive me for hiding my weakness. Help me believe Your grace is truly enough for me today. Amen.

The phrase 'rest upon me' in Greek (*episkēnoō*) literally means 'to pitch a tent upon.' It evokes the Old Testament tabernacle, where God's glorious presence dwelt among His people.
