He Loved Us First

Have you ever felt you had to earn God's love? John directly confronts this idea. He states plainly that anyone who does not love does not know God, because God's very nature is love (1 John 4:8). This is not just one of His attributes; it is who He is. The evidence for this is not a feeling in our hearts, but a fact of history. God made His love visible by sending His one and only Son into the world so that we might have life through Him (1 John 4:9). The most crucial point comes in verse ten. John wants us to be absolutely clear on the origin of this love. It did not begin with us. It was not our devotion, our goodness, or our seeking that initiated this relationship. It was God who acted first, while we were still sinners. He sent His Son as the *hilasmos*, the atoning sacrifice for our sins. Friend, I want you to let this truth settle deep into your spirit today. God's love for you is not a response. It is the starting point of everything. You may have woken up this morning with a heavy heart, feeling the weight of your own failures and shortcomings. You may feel you have not loved God as you ought. But listen to the apostle John: that is not where love began. Love began with God. His love for you was established long before your first breath. It was demonstrated conclusively when He sent Jesus to the cross for you. This is not a sentimental love that overlooks sin. It is a holy love that deals with sin. He did this not because you were lovely, but to make you lovely. He loved you first. This means you can rest. You can stop striving to be good enough to earn His affection. His affection for you is already a settled matter, purchased by the blood of His Son. You are secure. Your relationship with Him is not based on the fluctuating intensity of your feelings, but on the unshakeable fact of His sacrifice. How might your day change if you simply received this love as a gift, instead of trying to work for it as a wage?

Today, rest in this truth: God's love for you is not a negotiation based on your performance, but a declaration sealed at the cross.
