He Knows Your Name

Have you ever felt like just a number in a crowd? Jesus makes a claim that shatters all anonymity. When He says, "I am the good shepherd," He is not speaking in generalities. In first-century Judea, a shepherd’s relationship with his flock was intensely personal. He did not drive the sheep from behind with dogs; he walked ahead, and they followed the sound of his voice. He knew each sheep, its temperament, its weaknesses, and its marks. The flock was his livelihood and his life. By declaring, "I know my own," Jesus places Himself in this role of intimate guardianship. His knowledge of you is not distant or academic. It is the specific, caring knowledge of a protector who owns the flock. This relationship is also mutual. He says, "and my own know me." This is the beautiful exchange of relationship. His sheep recognize His voice, trust His leading, and find their security in His presence alone. He is not a stranger; He is their familiar and faithful guide.

The truth of this verse is a firm place for you to stand today. You are not just one of many that God keeps a general eye on. The Lord Jesus Christ knows you by name. He knows the anxieties you woke up with this morning. He knows the secret hopes you hold in your heart. He knows your past failures and your present struggles, and His knowledge of you is wrapped in perfect love. This is not the knowledge of an accuser, looking for faults. It is the knowledge of a Shepherd who seeks your good. Because He knows you completely, you can be completely honest with Him. You do not have to pretend or perform. You can come to Him just as you are, because He already knows. His knowledge is the foundation of His care for you. He leads you, provides for you, and protects you based on this perfect, personal understanding. This is the security of the believer. Your safety does not depend on your ability to hold onto Him, but on His unbreakable hold on you. He knows you, and He will not lose one of His own. Will you let the truth that you are fully known by the Good Shepherd quiet your anxious heart today?
