He Is Your Peace

Where do you build your altars of remembrance? Gideon has just survived a face to face meeting with the Angel of the Lord. He expected death, but God spoke life and assurance (Judges 6:23). His fear was real. The Midianite oppression was real. In this place of terror and uncertainty, Gideon's first act is not to sharpen a sword but to build an altar. He builds it right there in Ophrah, in enemy occupied territory. This was a bold, public statement. He names it "The Lord Is Peace." For the original audience, this was a radical claim. Their world was defined by violence and chaos. Gideon declares that peace is not an outcome of a future battle, but a present reality found in the character of God Himself. The altar was a physical anchor for this truth. It stood as a permanent testimony that peace comes from a Person, not from a change in circumstances.

You may feel like you are living in occupied territory today. Your heart, your home, your health. It can feel like the enemy has the upper hand. You have prayed for peace, for a ceasefire in your soul, but the anxiety remains. Look at what Gideon did. He did not feel peace and then build an altar. He met the Lord, heard His word of assurance, and built the altar as an act of faith. He named God as his peace before the battle was won. Your peace is not a feeling you must work up. It is a Person you can run to. Jesus Christ is your Yahweh-Shalom. He is the one who has stood in the place of judgment for you and said, “Peace. Do not be afraid.” Your security is not based on your performance or the stability of your world. It is based entirely on His finished work. The altar has been replaced by the cross, a permanent reminder that God has made peace with you through His Son (Colossians 1:20). Today, you can build an altar in your heart. You can name your trial, your fear, and then name your God over it: The Lord Is Peace. How would your day change if you truly believed that peace is not something you find, but Someone you have?

Since peace is a Person, not a feeling, how can you actively spend time with Jesus, your Peace, today?

Lord, You are my Peace. Forgive me for seeking peace in my circumstances instead of in You. Help me to trust that because I have You, I have everything I need for true rest. Amen.

The naming of places and altars after a divine encounter was a common patriarchal practice, seen with Abraham at "The Lord Will Provide" (Genesis 22:14) and Jacob at Bethel (Genesis 28:19).
