Chosen Before the World Began

Who were you before you were ever you? Paul begins his letter with an explosive statement of praise. He tells the Ephesian believers that their story did not begin with their birth or their conversion. Their story began in the heart of God “before the foundation of the world.” This was a radical idea. In a world where identity was tied to family, city, or religious works, Paul declares that a believer’s true identity is found in God’s eternal decision. This divine choice was not random. It was made “in him,” that is, in Christ. Your entire standing with God is secured by your connection to Jesus. And this choice has a purpose. God chose you so “that we should be holy and blameless before him.” Notice the order. He does not choose you because you are holy. He chooses you in order to make you holy. This is the goal of His gracious work in you, not the reason He started it.

So much of our lives are spent trying to prove our worth. We strive at work, in our families, and even in our faith, hoping to be good enough. We build our identity on our performance, and so we live in a constant state of anxiety, wondering if we measure up. But God’s word speaks a different truth over you today. Your identity was settled before you could do anything to earn it. Before you took your first breath, God chose you. He set His affection on you. This was not a reaction to your potential or a reward for your future obedience. It was an act of pure grace, flowing from His own good pleasure. You are not a spiritual employee trying to earn a promotion. You are a child, chosen and beloved. This means you can rest. Your acceptance is not based on how well you perform today. It is based on a decision God made in eternity and sealed in the work of Christ. When you fail, this truth is your anchor. You belong to Him. His love is not fragile. He is committed to His purpose for you: to make you holy and blameless. How might you live differently today, knowing you are not performing for acceptance, but living from it?

Today, live from your identity as God’s chosen child, not from the shifting feelings of your performance.

Father, thank you that my identity is not built on what I do but on Your eternal choice. Help me rest in the truth that I am loved and secure in Christ. Make me holy and blameless before You. Amen.

Ephesus was home to the great Temple of Artemis. Paul’s message of a personal God who chooses individuals stood in stark contrast to the impersonal, transactional pagan worship of the city.
