But I Will Hope Continually

What do you do when your reasons for hope run out? The psalmist, an old man facing enemies and the frailties of age (Psalm 71:9), makes a defiant declaration. His life is narrowing. His strength is failing. Yet he pivots from his complaint to a statement of pure faith. This is not a feeling, but a decision of the will against all evidence to the contrary. His choice is twofold: hope and praise. Notice the connection. Hope is not silent; it speaks. It praises God for a deliverance that has not yet arrived. For the original hearer, this was a powerful testimony. In a world with no social safety net, an abandoned old man was as good as dead. His hope was radically counter-cultural, placed entirely in a God who had been his trust from his youth (Psalm 71:5). His statement is a spiritual battle cry against despair.

This verse is a promise you can hold onto when life presses in. The psalmist does not say, “I feel hopeful.” He says, “I will hope.” This is a decision of your will, grounded not in your circumstances, but in the unchanging character of God. Your hope is not a wish. It is a confident expectation in a faithful Father who has already secured your ultimate victory in Jesus Christ. When your world feels like it is shrinking, when options disappear and strength fades, God invites you to make this same choice. Your hope is not in a better outcome, but in a good God. He is with you right now. He has not forgotten you. His promises are still true for you today, right where you are. Your pain does not get the last word. God does. So where do you need to choose hope today? Let your hope give voice to praise, even if it starts as a whisper. Tell God you will trust Him, not because of what you see, but because of who He is.

Today, when you feel discouraged, intentionally choose to hope in God's character and offer Him a single sentence of praise.

Father, when my heart is overwhelmed, help me to choose hope. I will not trust my feelings but Your faithfulness. Teach me to praise you more and more, even in this season of waiting. Amen.

Psalm 71 is one of the few psalms explicitly written from the perspective of an older person facing the trials of advanced age, making its declaration of continual hope even more powerful.
