For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, is working for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory. — 2 Corinthians 4:17
2 Corinthians 4:17
Observation
Does your current trouble feel light and momentary? Paul is not dismissing your pain. He is changing your perspective. He places your affliction on a scale. On one side, he puts your trouble, calling it “light” and “momentary.” On the other side, he places what that trouble is producing: an “eternal weight of glory” (2 Cor 4:17). He says the one is achieving the other. Your pain is not pointless. In God's hands, it has a purpose that will last forever.
Reflection
It is so easy to let the weight of today's problems crush your spirit. But God invites you to see differently. He wants you to know that your present struggle is not the final word. One early pastor pictured our afflictions as seeds planted in the ground. They are small and hidden now, but they are producing a magnificent, eternal harvest. God is not wasting your pain. He is using it to prepare you for a glory so real, so substantial, it outweighs every tear you have ever cried. What sorrow can you trust Him with today?
Sit With This
How would your response to this trial change if you truly believed it was producing an eternal weight of glory for you?
Prayer
Father, my troubles feel so heavy right now. Help me see them through your eyes, as light compared to the weight of glory you are preparing for me. Fix my gaze on the unseen reality of Jesus. Amen.
