A Deliberate Act of Praise

Have you ever told yourself to feel something? David speaks directly to his own soul here. This is not a passive feeling but a direct command. He summons everything inside him, his thoughts, emotions, and deepest parts, to one single task: blessing God. It is an act of the will. He is stirring himself to worship, gathering every part of his being to focus on God's holy name. This is an intentional, all-inclusive act of praise.

It is easy for your heart to feel distracted or cold. David shows you that praise is a choice you make, not just a feeling you wait for. You can speak to your own soul and command it to look at the Lord. This is a deliberate turning of your attention. Augustine of Hippo saw this as a way to “arouse the sleeping soul” to its proper duty and joy. You do not have to wait for inspiration.
